It’s quite some time since we caught up with Lee Wolfenden, owner of Wolfenden’s Barbers, on Church Road. When we first met, Lee had been open just four years.

Fast forward to today, and Wolfenden’s is now a whopping NINE years in. Wolfenden’s is a well-established, thriving and much-loved fixture of Cheadle Hulme. Lee’s distinctive indie style is both a trademark and an excellent advert for his art.

Two’s Company at Wolfenden’s Barbers

Now joined by the equally talented and equally personable Sophie, things (and clients) look good at Wolfenden’s. That’s despite a challenging year for everyone. Sophie and Lee go back a long way. They first became aware of each other’s work several years ago, when both worked for the same salon. That salon is widely regarded as one of THE best and most prestigious in South Manchester. You can be assured that Sophie’s credentials are right up there with Lee’s.

Sophie joins Wolfendens

Both share the same passion for barbering, and both strive to learn and grow. Both are highly qualified barbers – not all barbers attain their Level 3. Now there are TWO talented cutters working from Wolfenden’s, you’re guaranteed a great trim without the need to wait long for an appointment.

Back for Good. Good!

Sophie moved to Australia early on in her career; then she contacted Lee upon her return in 2019. Seemingly serendipitous timing soon gave way to lockdowns and uncertainty. Now, it’s time to really move forward with the business. A truly local lass before heading down under, Sophie studied at Pownall Green and Bramhall High. She always knew she’d head back where she belongs. She loves Cheadle Hulme and Bramhall. Living so far away for a few years has helped her appreciate home, friends and family even more.

She’s back and isn’t going anywhere. Sophie initially specialised in women’s hairstyling, so complicated scissor work and longer, lustrous locks don’t present any problems at all.

Lee (and Sophie) Scissorhands

Lee, too, is known for his scissor technique, and unlike some barbers, doesn’t resort to clippers simply to save time. His mastery of haircutting this way has earned him a stream of loyal customers, some household names including footballers and soap stars.

Lee’s local credentials are also second-to-none – he’s lived in Bramhall almost forever and is an ex-Hursthead and Bramhall High boy. His three children will follow his educational footsteps.

Live Local, LOVE Local

Like us, Lee and Sophie are both big on supporting local businesses. Chinese from Tangs, a curry from Barinda, Sunday roast or stocking the barbecue from Pimlott’s, are all perfect for family times. Nights out may involve the perennial favourite, the Church Inn or perhaps the Pointing Dog.

Number 8, Church Road is as stylish as any of our newer, cooler bars and eateries. Think Cheshire meets Northern Quarter – a cool, chilled out Manchester vibe with a bit of Cheshire polish. The walls pay homage to Oasis, Joy Division and the Smiths amongst other Manchester icons. There’s the odd sporting hero featured, too.

The chilled Wolfenden’s atmosphere makes this somewhere you WANT to be. Dads and Lads love it – the younger lads can feel cool, while the older lads KNOW Wolfendens’s is cool. They can’t wait to break up for Summer for their edgy skin fades – something Lee and Sophie can execute to perfection. Sadly – or not – it looks like the Foden won’t be in as much demand as anticipated.
