Body Barre is a whole new form of fitness class, brought here to Cheadle Hulme by talented dancer Michyla Hough. The beautiful and purpose-built dance studio is nestled just above Whittaker’s on Station Road – ever so handy and with plenty of parking nearby.
Body Barre Boutique is, says Michyla, all about fitness for anybody – and anybody. The COVID crisis put everything on pause, but it’ll be all systems go again soon. Body Barre Boutique is getting ready to hit the ground running. Or perhaps that should be dancing?
Barre fitness is a hybrid workout class. It brings together ballet-inspired moves with elements of Pilates, dance, yoga, and strength training. This is a fitness class for any age, any fitness level, ANYONE.
“Barre class is a workout technique inspired by elements of ballet, yoga, and Pilates, that focuses on low-impact, high-intensity movements incorporating a ballet barre.
Body barre is designed to strengthen and tone your body in ways that few other workouts can. Barre will help you build and strengthen your muscles, improve your core strength and posture and give your body a lean and toned look. With Barre, you will feel balanced, feel strong and feel energised.”
Michyla’s lived in the UK since she was 21 but grew up in New Zealand – and life has always been about dance. A ballet dancer from the age of 3, she studied the Royal Academy of Dancing syllabus and, at just 16, started teaching ballet. Michyla attended Wellington Performing Arts Centre and won many and various dancing roles, including a Hollywood movie and even the All Blacks’ cheerleading squad! Dance training and audition successes continued long after moving to the UK, too…
Once she eased off (well, just a little) Michyla moved here, between Cheadle Hulme and Bramhall, with her partner and children. Her passion for dance progressed into fitness and teaching fitness, so more qualifications followed. With level three Personal Training and level 2 Exercise to Music under her belt, Michyla taught at gyms including the Tytherington Club and eight years at David Lloyd in Cheadle. From there Michyla qualified with a First Class Physiotherapy degree in 2013. She continued to teach fitness as well as work as a Musculoskeletal physiotherapist, within the NHS and privately. And she still does!
Clearly a lady with an incredible work ethic and passion for her profession, Michyla then took things a step further. Body Barre Boutique began to take shape. Says Michyla: “I decided to open Body Barre Boutique to combine my passions of teaching and fitness in conjunction with the physiology and science of movement and the human body. Ballet, and dancing in general, was my life, so starting up Body Barre Boutique felt like a natural progression. Helping people get fitter, and feel better through movement is what I love to do.”
Barre is amazingly inclusive and really is for everyone. Some people find fitness classes intimidating, but that’s absolutely not the case at Body Barre Boutique. Michyla puts clients totally at ease, assuring everyone that fitness levels don’t matter – super fit or entry-level – and no dance experience is needed. It’s important to Michyla that her classes have a real community vibe. She often hears ‘I’m too old’ or ‘I’m too unfit’. That’s not the case, she says, ‘you get out what you put in, and there is no judgment in Body Barre Boutique classes. This is a chance to get away, think about nothing, and take the stresses away.’ During classes, exercises can be modified to each individual, and Michyla is dedicated to creating an ‘all in this together’ atmosphere, a camaraderie. There will also be one-to-one barre classes available, and capacity for private physio and sports massage.
Improved posture, muscle definition, fun, and improved bone density are just a few of the many benefits of Barre. Michyla’s knowledge and experience as a physio, dance teacher and fitness instructor make her the perfect class leader. She’s gathered a team with equally suitable enthusiasm, experience and qualifications, who also love to share their knowledge. Barre is already huge in America as well as New Zealand and Australia, so it’s very exciting to have Body Barre Boutique bring it to Cheadle Hulme.
Michyla loves Cheadle Hulme. As she points out, “Cheadle Hulme has a great community vibe. I’ve lived locally for almost 15 years and my children go to local schools. There’s no better place to open the studio. Station Road has a great feel, with local independent businesses supporting each other. Cafés, shops, fantastic restaurants – and a great village feel which only seems to keep growing. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming.” We couldn’t agree more. And we can’t wait for Body Barre Boutique to open their doors – we’ll see you there. Watch this space for when that will be…
